In the first quarter of a Monday Night Football showdown between the Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills safety Damer Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle and was given CPR before being taken off the field in an ambulance.
The NFL has since announced that the game will not resume tonight while Hamlin remains in critical condition.
“Our thoughts are with Dummer and Buffalo Bill. “We will provide more information as it becomes available,” the league said in a statement. “The NFL has been in constant contact with the NFL Players Association who are in agreement with postponing the game.”
Hamlin made a tackle on Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins with over five minutes to go in the first quarter and quickly recovered from the hit. The 24-year-old then collapsed on the ground after fixing his helmet. ESPN later reported that Hamlin was being given oxygen on the field.
Hamlin is a sixth-round pick out of Pittsburgh in the 2021 NFL Draft and has made 91 total tackles, 63 solo tackles and more than one sack in his career. The outpouring of support from teams and players around the league has seen everyone gather in prayer for the Bill’s safety.
The NFL Players Association has agreed with the league to postpone Monday night’s contest.
“The NFLPA and everyone in our community are praying for Asphalt Hamlin. We have been in contact with the Bills and Bengals players and the NFL. The only thing that matters at this time is Asphalt’s health and wellness. NFLPA said in a statement.
