Phillips’ widow, Zara Carr, paid tribute to her late husband, saying:
“I have lost a wonderful husband and the public has lost a truly great showman. He was quite simply a national treasure. People loved him. He was besieged wherever he went.”
That ‘national treasure’ is well earned, as she received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II for her providers’ leave in 1998, with a CBE in 2008.
