the director James Cameron Is on the verge of finally releasing its long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster Avatar, This is the second film of the franchise, Avatar: The Path of Water, is set to begin the four-sequel rollout that Cameron has worked on for some time. As it stands, the second film is set to return this December, with a sequel starting every two years. But Cameron says the continuation of the franchise after film three (which is usually made) is dependent on how this 12-month film is achieved.
In the December 2022 Challenge of Total Film (on sale November 10), Cameron explains:
“The market may tell us we’re done in three months, or we may be semi-completed, meaning: ‘Okay, let’s film the story within three, and not go on endlessly,’ if it’s profitable. No… we’re in a different world now than we were at the time I wrote this stuff, even. It’s a one-two punch – pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, maybe we guys Remind me what it’s like to go to the theatre. This movie sure does it. The question is, how many people give in as **** now?
It is a tough time to make a comeback with a film that you expect to do very well at the box office. After the pandemic, movies are not being made in as large numbers as they were earlier. Top Gun: Maverick And the Marvel movies have been the exception, and are expected to be the beginning of a growth spurt, although many agree that it is unlikely that we will return to day-to-day movie attendance numbers.
Avatar The box-office info broke so it clearly got a sizable following, but did Cameron miss his window of a successful sequel? I guess we’ll find out next month.
