Forty New York City elected officials and candidates were unopposed on election day—meaning that as long as they cared to vote for themselves, they won a term in office the following year.
A review of the New York City Board of Elections’ list of candidates found that one House candidate, 14 state Senate candidates and 25 Assembly contestants had no challengers on Election Day, and as long as they voted for themselves, on Tuesday. Victory was assured. ,
All but two of the combined 40 unopposed Election Day candidates are incumbent. Of the 40 uncontested candidates, just three are Republicans; The rest are Democrats—which isn’t too surprising in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans.
