However, there is one decentralized, open-source platform that has been making a lot of headlines lately – Mastodon. But what is a mastodon? What is Mastodon?
As previously talked about, Mastodon is a free, open-source social media platform founded in 2016 by Eugen Rochko. However, what makes Mastodon completely different from various platforms is that it is decentralized. Mastodon allows customers to choose the servers or communities that host their information and speaks about a specific topic, rather than being managed by a board of administrators or a tech mogul like Twitter.
Mastodon servers can possibly be just about any topic, “LBTQ+,” “activism,” or the equivalent, and are governed by directors, much like group admins on WhatsApp. While some servers require customers to stick a waiting list, some are prepared to stick. What’s more noticeable is that any consumer can create a server, known as an “instance”, by submitting a request, giving clients additional management.

Talking about content content, the decentralized platform reveals text-based “tots” in chronological order, while on Twitter, algorithms decide and recommend content content to customers. Tots can be up to 500 characters longer than tweets of 280 characters on Twitter. When customers talk to each other on Mastodon, they will accomplish this in a direct, personal and public privacy setting. Like other social media platforms, public tots are visible to all, while personal tots are visible only to followers. First, Mastodon does not have an unlimited consumer base, which may impact customers’ resolve to modify the platform. Secondly, the server-based build on which it actually works is probably too sophisticated for some clients. Nevertheless, the platform tweeted on Thursday that it recently gained over 2,30,000 subscribers and saw a 71% increase in active customers month-on-month.
