Will DeSantis serve full term if re-elected as Florida governor?

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Gov. Ron DeSantis, the big name in the politics game in Florida, has asked not only if he wins re-election, but how long he’ll be as governor if he does.

,

If you ask his Democratic rival Charlie Crist, he doesn’t think the governor will be like that.

In possibly one of the most viral clips of the single Florida gubernatorial debate in October, Crist appealed to viewers about the governor’s potential for the presidency of the United States.

“Let me remind the audience that he won’t even answer you if he’ll be there for four years if you re-elect him for governor,” Crist said. “You’re running for governor, you’re asking them to vote for governor, at least you should be able to tell them that if you’re re-elected you’ll serve as governor. “

According to the moderator’s comments, Crist had repeatedly asked DeSantis questions, despite debate rules preventing candidates from asking each other questions.

DeSantis, however, did not respond. It’s no secret that a number of pollsters have topped DeSantis, a list shared with former president and fellow Floridian Donald Trump, for the highest office in 2024.

However, if DeSantis runs, there are some rules regarding his time as governor, should he succeed in winning re-election.

DeSantis will have to step down, and announce his candidacy, as well as resign 10 days before the qualifiers for the presidency. For the 2024 election cycle, this means he will have to resign from the office of governor and hand over command of the state’s executive branch to Lieutenant Governor Janet Nunez by December 5, 2023.

So far, DeSantis has made no public comment on whether or not he will seek the presidency, saying instead that he was focused on the current governor’s race.
